Electric Rail Round-Up
By Paul M. Weyrich
February 06, 2007
Our correspondent in Columbus, Ohio said that while the Mayor has pushed for a downtown streetcar circulator, there appears to be no funding for the project thus the project is not going anywhere.
But the project for high-speed rail connecting the three C’s, Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland is moving with the strong support from Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH). The projects envisions moderate high speed rail (110 M.P.H.) for DMU passenger trains, as well as high-speed freight. Various activists around the state, as well as organized groups, are helping the Governor in his push for the rail project. He is proposing funds for high speed rail which may well pass the friendlier Senate. But it remains to be seen what will happen in the more conservative Ohio House of Representatives.
Ohio has been planning for High Speed Rail since the 1970’s but only now is the project being taken seriously.
